Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo granted Shs 15m cash bail

Renowned human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo has been granted a Shs 15 million cash bail after spending more than a week in custody.
Opiyo, the executive director of Chapter Four Uganda, a human rights organization was arrested last week on Tuesday with two others from a restaurant in Kamwokya in Kampala on allegations of money laundering. The arrest was in relation to a sum of $340,000 (Shs 1.2 billion) which was channelled through an account in Absa bank.
Prosecution alleges that Opiyo received $340,000 through Chapter Four Uganda on October 8, at a branch of Absa bank in Kampala, well knowing that the funds were proceeds of crime.
