President Joe Biden raised US concerns about China s human rights record and regional policy in a call with Xi Jinping on Wednesday, his first direct contact, since taking office last month, with the leader of the world s second-largest economy
.
It was Mr Xi s first call with a US president since he spoke to former president Donald Trump in March last year. Since then, relations between the two countries have plunged to their worst level in decades.
Mr Biden told his Chinese counterpart it was a US priority to preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific region and underscored his fundamental concerns about China s crackdown in Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and increasingly assertive actions toward Taiwan , the White House said
SAMR said the latest guidelines would stop monopolistic behaviours in the platform economy and protect fair competition in the market .
The notice also said it will stop companies from price fixing, restricting technologies and using data and algorithms to manipulate the market.
In a Q&A accompanying the notice, SAMR said reports of internet-related anti-monopoly behaviour had been increasing, and that it was facing challenges in regulating the industry. The behaviour is more concealed, the use of data, algorithms, platform rules and so on make it more difficult to discover and determine what are monopoly agreements, it said.
China has in recent months started to tighten scrutiny of its tech giants, reversing a once laissez-faire approach.
Retailer Next said on Thursday it had pulled out of the bidding as it was unable to meet the price expectations of the collapsed fashion chain.
ASOS is not holding any talks about buying Topshop stores, Sky News said, citing unnamed insiders. But it was also keen to acquire Arcadia s Miss Selfridge brand alongside Topshop and Topman, Sky said.
ASOS is competing against rivals including Boohoo Group , US retailer Authentic Brands Group, which is working with JD Sports Fashion, and Chinese fashion group Shein, the report added.
Arcadia went into administration in November, putting more than 13,000 jobs at risk and becoming Britain s biggest corporate casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic.
