UNITE launched a major national campaign today to end bosses’ “bully-boy” fire-and-rehire tactics.
Workers around the country began a fresh wave of strikes, solidarity actions and leafleting of workplaces to put pressure on PM Boris Johnson to outlaw the practice.
According to the TUC, one in 10 workers have already been threatened with fire and rehire – a situation in which bosses threaten staff with the sack unless they accept new contracts with worse pay and conditions.
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey has described the practice as a “disease that’s ripping through our workplaces.”
The union is fighting for members threatened with fire and rehire, including bus drivers at Go North West in Manchester and coffee workers at the Jacobs Douwe Egberts plant in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Britain begins using Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday in Wales just as its rollout of other shots has fallen to its lowest level this year due to a supply crunch caused by manufacturing problems at AstraZeneca.
Britain has surged ahead of the rest of Europe in the race to vaccinate its population, with almost half of its citizens receiving a first dose, but supply issues from its main Oxford-AstraZeneca shot have slowed progress in recent days.
Britain distributed almost 96,000 shots on Sunday and just over 105,000 on Monday, the lowest figures since the government started publishing daily numbers in January.

(Bloomberg) The U.K. began rolling out the Moderna Inc. vaccine on Wednesday, bolstering Britain’s Covid-19 immunization program amid concerns over AstraZeneca Plc’s shot and a shortfall of doses this month.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Moderna shot would first be offered in west Wales. It is the third approved vaccine to be offered in Britain, alongside shots from AstraZeneca and partners Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, and its rollout is around two weeks earlier than expected.
The U.K. has ordered 17 million doses of Moderna’s two-shot vaccine, enough for 8.5 million people.
