Wilmington s Northside could get a cooperative grocery store

For decades, residents on Wilmington s Northside have pushed for a grocery store.  But the area still doesn t have one, even as breweries and apartment buildings pop up in the neighborhood. It all just seems ridiculous, said Sheran Shorter, who lives in Rankin Terrace. Hi-Wire Brewing is thriving blocks from her home, but she has to drive miles out of the neighborhood to get groceries. That bothers me that we have a brewery that s thriving but we don t have a grocery store, she said. Shorter wants to see investment in the Northside that will help the people who live there. Right now, that s not happening.

Hi-Wire Brewing s new RAD Beer Garden slated to open midsummer

ASHEVILLE - The team at Hi-Wire Brewing has been busy. The Asheville-based brewery is working on the build-out of a new facility in Asheville s River Arts District. Simultaneously, co-founder Chris Frosaker said, Hi-Wire is building another location in Louisville, Kentucky. The 5,500-square-foot taproom will be the brewery s second outside of North Carolina. Hi-Wire is also the first out-of-state brewery to open new facilities in Kentucky. We re working on No. 6 and No. 7 at the same time, Frosaker said. It s got a mind of its own at this point. In Asheville, Hi-Wire s latest project, the RAD Beer Garden, is slated for a late-July opening, though the timing is dependent on city permits. The name of the new facility at 282 Lyman St. belies its main purpose as a distribution center and storage space. Beer production will remain at the brewery s nearby Big Top facility in Biltmore Village.
