The South African COVID variant (SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.351) has been identified in a patient residing in Northwest Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of health.  The VDH says the resident had no history of travel during the exposure period.   This newest case brings the state total to 5.  The variant first identified in the United Kingdom has been found in 15 other states or jurisdictions, according to the VDH.  The VDH says that there s no evidence this variant causes more severe disease but appears to be associated with increased person-to-person transmission of COVID-19.
