Surprise has narrowed its police chief search to six finalists and expects to name a new police chief by the end of the month, city officials announced Monday.
The northwest Valley suburb s former chief, Terry Young, stepped down in January to become Surprise s assistant city manager. Young had led the city s Police Department since 2015 after joining the Surprise department in 2010.
Assistant Police Chief Geoffrey Leggett was named interim chief. Leggett first joined the city force in 2011 and is one of the finalists for the position. The others include Aaron Jelcick, Daniel O Neil, Benny Pina, Robert Sanders and Doug Shoemaker.

MOKENA, IL The Mokena Village Board has appointed a new police chief for the village. After a nationwide search, John Keating has been appointed as chief of police, starting May 10.
In the meantime, Commander Randal Stumpf will serve as interim chief of police, after the Mokena Village Board appointed him to the position at its Monday meeting. Tim McCarthy had been serving as interim chief for the past several months, but his last day with the village was Monday, board documents state.

Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson on Wednesday announced that he has appointed King County Sheriff’s Office veteran Michelle Bennett to serve as the city’s acting chief of police, effective Thursday, March 18. Bennettt will replace Acting Chief Jim Lawless, who is resigning to take a job as assistant police chief in Marysville.
Bennett will serve as acting chief while the city conducts its recruitment for the next police chief a process that is estimated to take several months. Under city code, her appointment can run for six months or until the new chief is hired, whichever is sooner.

Lancaster city hired a social worker to join its police department in September 2019. In her first 18 months on the job, Leilany Tran referred more than 400 cases for social work, LNP | LancasterOnlineâs Dan Nephin reported Tuesday. To help with that workload, the department hired a second social worker, Grace Mentzer, earlier this year. Now-retired Capt. Sonja Stebbins first proposed using social workers in the department after studying the concept at Northwestern Universityâs School of Police Staff & Command.
