A regional subsistence advisory board seeks to limit caribou and moose hunting in Northwest Alaska to hunters from the region this summer. That’s at odds with the Dunleavy administration, which seeks to keep the hunt open to all.
In Northwest Alaska, subsistence hunting has been a tradition in the local Iñupiaq communities for more than 10,000 years. And due to the high cost of groceries and other goods, Kotzebue hunter Thomas Baker says that hasn’t changed.
5 Northwest Alaska residents test positive for COVID-19 since last week, mostly out of region
Five residents of the Maniilaq service area have tested positive for COVID-19 since last week, according to the regional health care provider. Most of the cases occurred outside of the Maniilaq service area, which includes Kotzebue, the Northwest Arctic Borough and the North Slope village of Point Hope.
Two Kotzebue residents tested positive on April 13. The first resident received the result in Kotzebue, where they are medically isolated. Maniilaq officials say the person is showing symptoms of the virus and had been in close contact with another positive case. The second resident tested positive outside the Maniilaq service area, and have not been to the region for more than two weeks. They are also showing symptoms of the virus, and remain isolated outside of the region.
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) â John Waghiyi remembers rushing his cousin to the clinic in the Bering Sea city of Savoonga in December, worried he was having a possible heart attack while out butchering a bowhead whale. Waghiyi arrived to see elders waiting in the lobby for a COVID-19 vaccine.
Waghiyi, 66, said he joined them and got a shot before returning to the coast to help finish the whale harvest.
Elders, he said, have set the tone in the Alaska Native community of 735 on the coast of isolated St. Lawrence Island. Vaccination rates for eligible residents 16 or older are among the regionâs best, with over 80% having had at least one dose, according to the regional tribal health corporation.
