Crews extinguish duplex fire on California Street

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Fire crews extinguished a structure fire in Huntsville Wednesday morning.
Huntsville Fire & Rescue responded to an emergency call at a vacant house on California Street in North Huntsville shortly after 4:30 a.m.
Huntsville Fire told WAFF’s Kailey Schuyler that two crew members fell through a hole in the floor as they walked in but were immediately pulled out. No injuries were reported
The fire started in the duplex’s basement and went though the attic.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - For the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic, rental assistance is on the way for people struggling to pay their bills.
Madison County District 6 Commissioner Violet Edwards said the county has $5.2 million from the federal government as part of the latest stimulus package. The package is sending $25 billion in rent relief out across the country.
Edwards has been leading the charge on securing this money for the county.

“Black people don’t drink coffee.”
The entrepreneurs behind Dark Side - a new coffee shop located in historically African-American North Huntsville - say they were given that (eyebrow-raising) advice 18 months or so ago, as they were getting started.
“And this is from very credible people,” says Devyn Keith, who in addition to being a Dark Side co-owner is Huntsville City Council president. “I think the problem for us was,” Keith, who is Black, continues, “we’ve proved that we liked the same things, in other parts of town.”
