A tsunami siren false alarm caused widespread worry in parts of Northland with Northpower - which runs the siren network - apologising and vowing to do everything to ensure it doesn t happen again.
Northpower has apologised to people in the Kaipara and Whangārei Districts after an unnamed technical issue in its control systems caused the coastal tsunami sirens to activate from 8.21pm to 8.24pm on Monday night.

Northpower has apologised to people in the Kaipara and Whangārei Districts after a technical issue in its control systems caused the coastal tsunami sirens to activate last night.
The sirens went off from 8.21pm to 8.24pm last night.
The false alarm comes after the tsunami siren network was sounded for real when an tsunami evacuation order was issued for Northland on March 5 after the massive 8.1 magnitude earthquake at the Kermadecs.

Whangārei s Town Basin emptied very quickly during the March 5 tsunami alert.
More than 250 yachts are moored at Whangārei Marina s Town Basin and Kissing Point facilities.
Many are home to international yachties, Covid-19 refugees in New Zealand via ongoing short-term visa extensions.
The Northern Advocate asked what Town Basin boaties thought of Whangārei s tsunami evacuation, putting the same questions to them as they did to central city retailers. The questions were:

The Rotorua Daily Post s average issue readership for people 15 and over is holding steady at 22,000 - the same number as it was at the end of last September and 9000 more than a year ago, new figures show.
The regional newspaper s weekly readership sits at 43,000 while its sister daily paper, the Bay of Plenty Times, grew its average issue readership by 5000 readers since last September and 11,000 readers compared with a year ago, according to the latest Nielsen news readership insights.
