Andrew Wells was crossing the street about 1:05 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Laramie Avenue when he was hit by a driver who lost control of their car after hitting another vehicle while driving east on Thomas Street, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The driver fled the scene after striking the 75-year-old, police said. Wells was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating the incident.

Man dies after West Side shooting in which Chicago cop fired at suspected gunman

Gregory Simmons, 27, was pronounced dead at noon Saturday at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. A Chicago police officer intervened in the shooting and fired at the suspected gunman, but it was unclear if the suspect was shot, police said. About 11:45 a.m. Friday, Simmons was driving in the 1500 block of North Laramie Avenue when someone fired shots at his car, striking him in the head, officials said. Community Safety Team officers saw the shooting unfold and one of the officers fired three shots at the male suspect, who ran west on Le Moyne Street and was not in custody, police said. It was not clear if he had been shot.

Man Critically Hurt in West Side Shooting

Shots were fired at and by police in the 1500 block of North Laramie Avenue, Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern said on Twitter. Paramedics responded to a man shot about 11:50 a.m. at Laramie Avenue and Le Moyne Street, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to his head, Langford said. He was listed in critical condition.
