A 64-year-old man from Eagle Lake was taken to the hospital Tuesday evening after a two-vehicle crash in northern Aroostook County.
State Police say Gary Theriault was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck on Route 11 in Wallagrass just after dark. Due to the snowy conditions and poor visibility, police say, Theriault was unable to identify a UPS vehicle that was parked in front of a residence delivering a package.” He tried to avoid a collision, but sideswiped the truck and ended up sliding off the road.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 remained flat at a high level across Maine for a second week running, but the burden has clearly shifted back to hospitals in Portland and Lewiston, giving Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center a respite.
Maine Medical Center in Portland, the state’s largest hospital with 613 beds, has experienced its heaviest week since the pandemic began, with an average of 40.9 COVID-19 inpatients a day for the week ending Thursday. It is the third week in a row that Maine Med has broken its record, which stood at 38 COVID-19 inpatients per day two weeks ago today and 38.4 last week.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 remained heavy statewide in Maine this week, but the burden has spread out more evenly across hospitals.
Wednesday was the worst day yet of the pandemic in terms of the number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus – 207, with 64 in intensive care. Tuesday was the heaviest day yet for ICU use, with 68 people being treated. The overall inpatient count fell slightly Thursday to 193.
The distribution of patients across the state was more even this week, with many hospitals seeing heavy COVID-19 burdens but only one – Maine Medical Center in Portland – setting a new weekly record.

On Thursday, a record 202 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized statewide with 55 in intensive care, also a record number. But the geography of hospitalizations shifted southward during the week, driving confirmed COVID-19 inpatient numbers to record levels at York County’s hospitals and at Maine Medical Center in Portland, the state’s largest hospital.
