LOWELL, Mass. - A product that detects and helps seal leaks in ill-fitting face masks to protect against COVID-19 and other environmental hazards recently won top honors in UMass Lowell s annual student entrepreneurship pitch competition.
Called TrueFIT, the invention was named the Rist Campuswide DifferenceMaker in UMass Lowell s 2021 DifferenceMaker $50,000 Idea Challenge, a contest that caps a year-long program that teaches students in all majors skills they can use to launch their own businesses and nonprofits.
TrueFIT was one of 10 innovations showcased before expert judges during the competition s final round, which was held online and viewed by more than 100 people. Fifty teams entered the challenge, now in its ninth year.
OPINION: Time for a reckoning on Weston s school report card
John Sallay
The following was submitted by John Sallay:
Relative to comparable affluent Boston area school districts, Weston Public School academic performance is not exceptional, despite per pupil expenses that are 26% higher than these comparable districts. In a town so dedicated to academic excellence, these facts are doubly concerning since the School Committee rather than urgently addressing these issues is now proposing another budget increase, despite declining enrollment, and an $80,000 recreation planning study. This study will most likely result in plans for more school athletic facilities, on top of the $5 million we spent to renovate the football field and track a few years ago.
Deborah Boyd is unanimous choice for Tantasqua Regional School District superintendent
Updated 9:35 PM;
STURBRIDGE The Tantasqua Regional and Union 61 school committees unanimously voted Tuesday evening to promote associate superintendent Deborah Boyd to be the next superintendent of schools.
Committee members said her integrity and candidness are among her best qualities, in addition to being expert on school finance. She has been with the district 20 years, previously serving as finance director.
The district includes Brimfield, Brookfield, Holland, Sturbridge and Wales.
Boyd will succeed Erin Nosek, who was hired in 2012 and was previously the North Brookfield superintendent. Nosek plans to step down at year’s end.
