POLICE officers in North Berwick issued five tickets within two days to people they caught breaching lockdown rules and driving to the town from Edinburgh. Under the current restrictions, it is against the law to leave your local authority area for anything other than a limited number of essential reasons. The drivers said to police after they had been stopped that they were simply “out for a drive” or after some “peace and quiet”.

Tributes paid after death of Lady Jan Tweedie

TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known North Berwick woman who passed away on Boxing Day. Lady Janice Tweedie was known by everyone as Jan and played an important role in the local community, volunteering and helping out at several charity and community groups. Born in Juniper Green, near Edinburgh, on October 28, 1945, she moved to North Berwick as a child and spent most of her life there, attending North Berwick High School. She spoke fluent German, having learned it at school. She worked in Germany for two years as a secretary, leaving Scotland when she was about 19. After returning from Germany, she became secretary in the business studies department at the University of Edinburgh; she previously attended secretarial college. She worked there from 1967 to 1974.

During November, 13 calls relating to anti-social behaviour were made, with gatherings of youths – particularly in the Lodge Grounds – continuing to be an issue. Some of the incidents were: On November 6, police received a call concerning a man walking on Lochbridge Road with a laceration to his face. Police traced the man to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he was spoken to and it was established that he was assaulted. Enquiries are ongoing.
