THE CWU postal workers trade union yesterday insisted that criminal investigations must take place ‘into senior Post Office figures who oversaw the criminalisation of hundreds of postmasters’.
The union is making its demand after 39 postmasters have had their convictions for theft, fraud or false accounting quashed by the Court of Appeal.
Judges overseeing the case ruled that corrupted data from the Post Office’s Horizon system was at fault, not the workers. The system, which was supplied by Fujitsu, erroneously registered cash shortages.
It was also ruled that the Post Office prevented workers from having a fair trial on whether that system’s data was reliable.
The ITV News political editor made the claims on his channel’s news blog on Monday. He said that two separate people had corroborated the claims made in the Daily Mail to him. Peston said that neither of these two people had spoken to that newspaper, suggesting there are at least three sources who allegedly heard Johnson make the comment. The Daily Mail story makes reference to “those who heard the comment and often refers to sources in the plural, suggesting as many as four people may be in agreement and in opposition to Downing Street’s denial. The Prime Minister is alleged to have been frustrated at having had to order a second lockdown, having been pressured into it by other top Tories.

MPs are challenging the government to live up to a promise to help homeowners trapped paying high interest rates because the Treasury sold their mortgages to unregulated firms.
Since they cannot switch to a better deal, an estimated 250,000 homeowners are forced to pay standard variable interest rates.
These are well above what a competitive mortgage would charge.
But moves to ease their plight are being blocked, MPs say.
The House of Lords has passed an amendment to the Financial Services Act to cap rates for borrowers in that position, known as mortgage prisoners .
