Clay’s NLL membership gets a step closer to reality Published by sports@presspub. on Thu, 04/15/2021 - 1:46pm
The Northern Lakes League invited four schools, Clay, Fremont Ross, Whitmer, and Findlay, to join the league. The vote by the NLL’s principals was unanimous. Oregon City Schools Superintendent Hal Gregory says he plans to present a resolution to the board at its next regular meeting on April 20. If the school boards from those four districts vote to leave the Three Rivers Athletic Conference and join the NLL, the NLL will have 11 teams effective the 2023-24 season. “We look forward to hearing back from these schools in the coming days to formally accept this invitation,” stated an NLL press release. “We anticipate that these new members will join our league beginning with the 2023-24 season.

In Eastwood’s 5-4 non-league win over Maumee, junior catcher Andrew Arnston belted a two-run homer to the deepest part of the Panthers’ field in the third inning. That proved to be the difference in Eastwood’s third win of the season, coming after the Eagles swept a doubleheader over Tiffin Calvert. Now the Eagles are 10-0 and Arnston is hitting .538 with three home runs, four doubles, 21 RBIs and 16 runs. In the win over future Northern Buckeye Conference foe Maumee, Arnston reached base three times, including on an infield single and an error, scoring twice.

Genoa baseball returns 12 letter winners from a team that went 14-8 in 2019. They include junior first baseman and pitcher Seth Witt, who was first team All-NBC as a freshman. Seniors joining Witt include second baseman and pitcher Joey Large, third basemen and pitchers Jacob Emerson and Cole Nissen, catcher and first baseman Tommy Giles, outfielders Zack Buhrow and Devin D’Emilio and outfielder and catcher Connor Lagrange. Large has already committed to playing at Defiance College next year.

In his third season at the helm of Genoa softball, Michael Burriola has two letter winners from the 2019 season. However, Burriola has plenty of talent returning. He says they just need varsity playing experience. The majority of his players from Genoa’s 18-8 team two years ago were juniors and seniors. “We are very inexperienced,” Burriola said. “Last year because of COVID we were unable to develop kids and we are learning on the fly this year.” One thing that is for sure, Genoa has “excellent speed” and “good pitching,” says Burriola. Returning is senior center fielder Caitlin Cruickshank, who was first team All-NBC, batted .414 and led the team in doubles (11) and triples (4). She was 43-for-96 with 35 runs, two home runs, 21 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. She is expected to lead the team at the plate again.
