The Secretary of Homeland Security announced the closure of two jails for undocumented immigrants holding, as per the official DHS memo, “individuals whose continued detention is needed to achieve our national security, public safety, and border security mission”. However, at the Latino nets, the prisons were identified as “detention centers”, and the prisoners, not as a threat for national security, but “persons with ongoing immigration processes”, in the words of Univision anchor Borja Voces.
Two Univision reports on immigration -and one at Telemundo- that aired after the “breaking news” of Mayorkas’ decision, were more like public relations informercials than actual news about the immigration crisis. Watch:

DHS to Stop Using Two Immigration Jails Accused of Detainee Abuses

The federal Department of Homeland Security will stop using two immigration jails that have that have been accused of mistreating detained undocumented immigrants.
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that Biden Administration will cancel contracts for the use of the two jails, one in Georgia run by a local Sheriff’s Department and one in Massachusetts run by a private company.
“Allow me to state one foundational principle,” Mayorkas said, “We will not tolerate the mistreatment of individuals in civil immigration detention or substandard conditions of detention.”
