Earl Freudenberg: David Leatherwood Retires After 52 Years In The Grocery Business Monday, February 15, 2021 - by Earl Freudenberg David Leatherwood David Leatherwood is retiring from the Food City in Hixson at the end of the month.  David has helped feed our families for 52 years.  He started with the Red Food Store while still a student at Hixson High School and went from bag boy to manager.  My father Charles was a regular customer at the Rivermont Store. Dad, who was in the grocery business in North Chattanooga for years, said Mr. Leatherwood was one of the last old fashion grocery store managers.  Mr. Leatherwood was always interested in my father’s experiences in the food store business.  Dad said Mr. Leatherwood would greet each customer with a smile and “is there anything I can help you with?”

Northside Neighborhood House Celebrates Its 97th Year Of Service Thursday, February 11, 2021 February 14, 2021, marks the 97th anniversary of Northside Neighborhood House, the mission of which is to promote the independence of residents north of the Tennessee River within Hamilton County by providing a hand up through education and assistance. The NNH was founded in 1924 by a group of women who saw their neighbors living in poverty on the banks of the north shore in downtown Chattanooga. They were living in shacks and needed bedding during the cold winter months. Instead of just bringing blankets from their homes, the women also taught skills such as quilting, nutrition, and budgeting. They then opened a settlement house to meet other needs. Ninety-seven years later, the NNH is still a safe space for neighbors to turn to when they are in a difficult place.

Planning Commission Recommends 2 Ooltewah Residential Projects For Approval Tuesday, February 9, 2021 - by Gail Perry Two new, large housing developments in Ooltewah were given a recommendation to move forward by the Planning Commission on Monday.   A 46.4-acre property at 7210 Snowhill Road was rezoned from A-1, agricultural district to R-1, single family residential district with no opposition. Pratt and Associates was approved for a Planned Unit Development of 137 units at the location which is compatible with the Wolftever Creek land use plan. That larger plan, however, has low density, so the Regional Planning Agency staff put conditions on the development that require that it be surrounded by a landscaped buffer. Mike Price, owner of MPA Engineers¸ said a 10-foot buffer is planned along Snowhill Road as well as the north and south boundaries. The buffers will be planted with trees spaced 25 feet apart.
