Wildlife Encounters in Ladysmith and Duncan SHARE ON: The residents of Ladysmith and Duncan have received reminders of just close we are to nature. On Friday morning in Ladysmith, a black bear had to be given an RCMP escort out of town. In a post on its Facebook Page, Ladysmith said police vehicles followed it along 2nd avenue to the Ladysmith Cemetery where it returned to the forest. The town said residents can help avoid encounters by keeping garbage cans and compost bins stored securely until it’s time for collection. In Duncan, the North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP alerted residents to a cougar sighting that took place on Thursday evening.

Police and Coroner Investigate Death of a Child at Duncan Motel SHARE ON: The RCMP is investigating the death of a child at a motel in Duncan on Friday night. Just after 9 pm, ambulance paramedics and the North Cowichan Duncan RCMP received a report of an unresponsive child. First responders made efforts to resuscitate the child, but the 6-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police remained at the motel today conducting their investigation and the BC Coroners Service is started it’s own investigation into the circumstances around the child’s death. RCMP Victim Services is providing support to the family.
