The Ohio Expositions Commission on Thursday approved a 75-year lease with Columbus Crew SC, granting more than 25 acres of state land for a team practice facility and venue for future concerts and other events at the existing Mapfre Stadium and its adjacent parking areas.
However, still under discussion is a proposed city of Columbus recreation facility that was promised two years ago as part of a deal to build the team a new Downtown soccer stadium.
The deal with the Crew contained some financial motivation for the Expo Center a $2 million up-front payment due in April. Officials said the money is a welcome shot in the arm for the organization that puts on the Ohio State Fair while its finances have been decimated by the ban on mass gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
