For thousands of years, the sheltered and fertile plains and river courses that make up the vale of Tralee have attracted settlers to the region.
From the first farmers to the Normans, right up to the present, the area is home to an eclectic array of pre-historic and modern settlement.
One of the positives to come from the wholesale development in the past 20 years has been the depth of archaeological features that have pieced together our past. A case in point is the publication of In the Vale of Tralee: the Archaeology of the N22 Tralee Bypass .
Edited by Patricia Long, Paul O Keeffe and Isabel Bennett, it presents the remarkable discoveries made along the route of the bypass by archaeologists from Rubicon Heritage Services and Irish Archaeological Consultancy in 2010 and 2011. A merger of Cara and Clanmaurice Credit Unions is in the final stages.
Clanmaurice Credit Union, which serves communities in North Kerry including Ballyduff and Causeway, is proposing to merge with Cara Credit Union, which has members in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin.
CEO of Clanmaurice Credit Union, Donal Scannell, says increased regulation in recent years means there are more challenges to be faced by credit unions, including requirements to have specialised staff in anti-money laundering and risk and compliance.
Mr Scannell says it’s expected members of Clanmaurice Credit Union will get to vote on the proposed merger in late February.
Intensive dairying
It was originally a tillage farm before being laid down in permanent pasture. Selling agent Eamonn McQuinn of McQuinn Property Services gives the context: “As was typical of the big switch to intensive dairying in North Kerry during the late 1960’s and 1970’s, this land was freshly reseeded, central farm roadways were constructed and a relatively inexpensive and simple farmyard was constructed, he says. The land was divided into a paddock system and was serviced with a good water and power supply. Increased cow numbers followed.” The farm has direct access from the public road on two sides.”
