It would require school districts and charter schools with 400 or more students to list online what instructional materials they used in the past school year. The bill now goes to the Senate. The North Carolina Association of Educators called the legislation “teacher abuse” and urged people to sign a letter asking the Senate not to pass the bill. “How does the NC General Assembly celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week?” NCAE said in its action alert Wednesday. “They pass a bill that undermines academic freedom and punishes creative teaching, of course. The problem is that at one time, those “undesirables” including anyone with the wrong amount of melanin in their skin. That’s right, it was designed to keep black people from buying guns. Requirements that included nebulous and vague language about people being “of good moral character” was a smokescreen so sheriffs could deny permits to anyone. It was a holdover from Jim Crow.

His statement comes three days after Andrew Brown Jr., a 42-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office deputies in the city. The events were captured by the deputies’ body cameras. “I’ve asked the State Bureau of Investigation to confirm for me that the releasing of the video will not undermine their investigation,” said Wooten. “Once I get that confirmation, our county will file a motion in court, hopefully Monday, to have the footage released.”

North Carolina sheriff says he wants footage of Andrew Brown Jr. police shooting made public and may file motion Monday Pasquotank County, North Carolina, Sheriff Tommy Wooten said Saturday he wants body cam footage of the fatal police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. made public. “Only a judge can release the video,” Wooten said in a video message posted on Facebook. “That’s why I’ve asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to confirm for me that the releasing of the video will not undermine their investigation.” Once he gets that confirmation, the sheriff said the county will file a motion in court, “hopefully Monday,” to have that footage released. His announcement followed calls from Elizabeth City leaders for the footage to be released.
