New research from scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows promise for a vaccine that aims to protect people from COVID-19, its variants, and other coronaviruses known to pose a threat to humans.
The study published in the Journal Science gives hope to the idea of stopping multiple coronaviruses with a single vaccine some refer to the idea as a universal vaccine. Since the 2003 SARS outbreak and current COVID-19 pandemic both emerged from the same subgenus of coronaviruses, researchers say creating that vaccine may be more important than ever.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed legislation Friday that would have ended additional federal benefits created during the pandemic for North Carolina’s unemployed before the program expires nationwide. His action counters trends by Republican governors to no longer accept the supplemental payments.
Cooper said he blocked the measure originating from the GOP-controlled legislature because rejecting these federal funds now hurts the state.
“Unemployment is declining with more people getting vaccinated and into the workforce as North Carolina has strengthened work search requirements for those receiving benefits,” Cooper said in a statement. “The federal help that this bill cuts off will only last a few more weeks and it supplements North Carolina’s state benefits, which are among the stingiest in the country. The 75-foot-tall granite monument overlooked Hillsborough Street since 1895, spurring the erection of similar monuments across North Carolina.
James Williams, the retired chief public defender for Orange and Chatham Counties, chairs the North Carolina Commission on Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Criminal Justice System (NC CRED). Williams says he enjoys seeing a patch of grass where that monument once stood. I know what that statue stood for, what it represented, said Williams, sitting on a bench near the empty space. Having a monument that speaks to slaveocracy, sends the exact opposite message, particularly to Black people, that they can expect fairness and fair treatment.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has issued an executive order allowing college athletes to earn money off the use of their names, images and likenesses.
Cooper’s order, signed Friday, comes one day after an NCAA rule change went into effect allowing athletes to profit from their fame without endangering their eligibility or putting their school in jeopardy of violating amateurism rules.
The NCAA’s move suspended restrictions on payments to athletes for opportunities such as sponsorship deals, online endorsements and personal appearances. It came after multiple states such as Florida, Alabama and Mississippi already pushed ahead with NIL laws permitting those actions as of Thursday.
