North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper pushed for unity among lawmakers and safety nets for North Carolinians on Monday night during his State of the State address.
Cooper, a Democrat, called on the Republicans in the North Carolina Legislature to work with him and other Democrats to find common ground on the state s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Legislative leaders in the Republican-majority General Assembly said they have the same end goal but a different approach.
Unlike some states, North Carolina has made it through one year of the COVID-19 pandemic with its rainy day fund and unemployment reserves intact.

 The question is both bold and nuanced, and potentially life changing for both parties. From week to week, Iâve been trying to engage us in various conversations that will help us better connect.
I am honored to have been part of a successful connection while editing a publication in the Triad region of North Carolina. The area was losing lots of jobs in its traditional industries â the manufacturing of textiles, furniture and tobacco. At the same time, the Triad was trying to grow its health care capacity. There was only one problem: They didnât have enough workers. Or so they thought.
“We’ve got to provide, at each of our colleges, more opportunities for apprenticeships for these students,” Walter G. Bumphus, president and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges, said at the House hearing.
In some states, apprenticeship programs are growing rapidly. Senator Richard Burr, a Republican from North Carolina, said he was particularly proud of the work his home state’s community colleges have done so far with respect to apprenticeship programs.
Once the North Carolina Legislature transferred the state s apprenticeship program to the community college system in 2017, both the number of students and types of industries offering apprenticeships which have traditionally been primarily in the construction and manufacturing sectors have increased significantly, said Scott Ralls, president of Wake Technical Community College, at the Senate hearing.

I was as surprised as anyone when I heard that the North Carolina Legislature, in the late 1980s, had mandated that citizens within our state should, and would, receive a National Public Radio signal generated within the state boundaries. I had been listening to NPR, and especially
Morning Edition, for decades on the WEPR affiliate of the South Carolina ETV network. Since no such network existed in North Carolina, both the far Eastern and Western portions of our state had no NPR representation. All of that was about to change.
It was through a series of events, some that now seem providential, that WNCW came into being, and was established on the campus of Isothermal Community College. We all take for granted, some almost three decades later, of the impact WNCW has had, not only in our region, but also on the public radio landscape nationwide, and in the new era of cyber broadcasting, on the International scene as well.
