The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog group that monitors the quality of U.S. health care, is out with its latest grades for hospital safety and Maine hospitals are again near the top of the class.
Nine of 16 evaluated hospitals in the state received an “A,” and Maine ranked No. 3 in the U.S. for the highest percentage of facilities receiving the top grade.
The A list comprises: Cary Medical Center, Caribou; Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston; Franklin Memorial Hospital, Farmington; Maine Medical Center, Portland; Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick; Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital, Presque Isle; Northern Light Inland Hospital, Waterville; Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport; and Southern Maine Healthcare, Biddeford.
One Man Dead & Two People Injured in Crash, Blue Hill, Maine
One man was killed and two people were injured when two pickups collided in Blue Hill late Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, 53-year-old Richard Goodwin of Stonington was driving on the Ellsworth Road just before 5:00 p.m. when his pickup truck drifted across the centerline and struck another truck nearly head on.
Police say Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, 47-year-old William Webb of Blue Hill was taken to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. His passenger, 45-year-old Doris Webb of Blue Hill, was transferred to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital with serious injuries.

Pickup truck gets struck on trail
ELLSWORTH The Hancock County Regional Communications Center got a call for help from a woman in Sullivan reporting that she and her boyfriend had gotten their pickup truck stuck on the Donnell Pond Trail just after 11 p.m. on March 28.
“They were over 3 miles in on the trail and there was no way for a wrecker to get to them,” said Deputy Jeff McFarland. “The Hancock RCC referred them to the Warden Service for assistance, as we were not able to get to them with a cruiser.”
Arrests
Deputy Dylan Hall arrested a Northeast Harbor woman after a traffic stop on the Bucksport Road in Ellsworth Saturday. Stacy Smith, 52, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant.
