Researchers at University of Alberta have uncovered a link between the expression of the protein galectin-9 (gal-9) and whether a cancer patient will benefit from immunotherapy.
The discovery could help inform physicians about which patients will likely respond to immunotherapy, and lead to better treatment options.
Shokrollah Elahi, a member of the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA), collaborated with oncology professor John Walker on Phase 2 clinical trial that examined 40 patients with virus-associated solid tumours (VASTs) who were put on immunotherapy.
They found there was a direct link between patients with high levels of gal-9 and those who had a poor prognosis and did not respond to immunotherapy. Further, patients with lower levels of gal-9 responded better to treatment.

Forest Waterberry, an ecologically highly important tree species growing in regenerated sites, Nyungwe, Rwanda (WCS Rwanda/PA)
An area of forests larger than mainland France has regrown around the world since the turn of the new millennium, a new analysis suggests.
The mapping study from the Trillion Trees project found that nearly 59 million hectares (145 million acres) of forests have grown back worldwide since 2000.
This area of returning woodlands could store the equivalent of 5.9 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, more than then annual emissions of the US, highlighting the role they could play in tackling the climate crisis, the study said.

“The greats always deliver. The greats, they never disappoint.” Kevin Lowe.
EDMONTON It doesn’t take a savant to recognize the stage. To look at the schedule, see a Hockey Night in Canada game and an opportunity to make coast-to-coast memories, and realize how cool it would be to score a 100th point in game No. 53. Or, on another unforgettable Northern Alberta night, a 50th goal in 39 games.
