State Senator Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) announced today that his top budget priorities were included and fully funded in Budget Act of 2021. Senator Newman’s 2021 priorities included funding to address public safety and homelessness, investments to preserve additional open space at West Coyote Hills and expanded arts and cultural programming at the architecturally important Hunt Library.
Funding details:
$31.2 million to extend and expand the North Orange County Public Safety Task Force.
$28.5 million to acquire the last remaining substantial open space in North Orange County, West Coyote Hills.
$2.75 million to revitalize the Hunt Library in the City of Fullerton.

The North Orange County Public Safety Task Force was created in 2017 following the Senator’s budget request. The Task Force devises regional solutions to homelessness, youth violence and the challenges associated with post-incarceration reentry. The Task Force funding was set to expire this
BUENA PARK, CA - Jamboree Housing Corporation announced that construction has begun on Ascent, a 57-unit supportive housing community in Buena Park, located in northern Orange County near the Los Angeles County border. Ascent is Jamboree’s first Permanent Supportive Housing community in the City of Buena Park and builds upon the commitment both partners have to address chronic homelessness through the creation of more supportive housing communities. Ascent is Jamboree and the City of Buena Park’s third collaboration to create more affordable housing – Park Landing in 2013 and Clark Commons in 2016 – which provided 140 new apartment homes for working families.

Nonprofit developer Jamboree Housing Corporation and the City of Buena Park partner on their first permanent supportive housing community in the northern city of Orange County. The third collaboration in Buena Park for Jamboree and the City, the motel conversion of Airport Inn into 57 supportive housing studios with custom resident services will set aside 28 apartments for residents living with a mental health diagnosis.

Mentorship Program Pairs Students With Police
A mentorship program to expose young people to career paths in law enforcement has teamed up with select North Orange County, California, schools.
The Bigs with Badges program, a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters and the North Orange County public safety taskforce, aims to expose students to potential careers in public safety and law enforcement.
The program matches young participants to one-on-one mentors with individuals from public safety agencies. The pairing provides support, guidance, and behind-the-scenes insights to career paths, said Big Brothers Big Sisters spokesperson Allison Hata.
“Bigs with Badges offers a chance for youth participants to learn firsthand about different opportunities within the industry while building social capital,” Hata told The Epoch Times.
