Ely s Bear Center reopens for the season

Keith Vandervort ELY - The North American Bear Center here, the only black bear and wildlife educational facility of its kind, re-opened for the season this month and is once again welcoming visitors after a year of COVID-19 restrictions “We are dedicated to replacing old myths with facts. People learn from the bears themselves about bear behavior, ecology, and their relations with humans,” said Senior Operations Director Scott Edgett. “We work closely with our partners at the Wildlife Research Institute and renowned bear biologist Dr. Lynn Rogers to create exhibits and content for the Bear Center. You can spend hours or days exploring all of our exhibits and videos about black bear behavior and animals that coexist with black bears in the north woods.”

Colorado May Have Just Had Its First Fatal Bear Attack in More Than a Decade

Already have an account? Photo: Bill Pennell / Unsplash A Colorado woman died on Friday in what wildlife officials believe is the first fatal bear attack to take place in Colorado since 2009. In a press release, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said that it believed the victim, a 39-year-old woman, took her dogs out on a walk near her home in Durango on the morning of April 30. When her boyfriend returned home at 8:30 that night, he said he discovered the two dogs outside their house, but couldn’t locate her. After searching the area for about an hour, he discovered her body, prompting him to call 911. Responding wildlife officers discovered “signs of consumption,” as well as bear scat and hair around the body.

Real Ranger: LovELY Cakes

Created: February 15, 2021 04:06 PM Susan Laine has been baking up a storm in Ely. She s now completed more than 200 LovELY cakes during the pandemic. The whole idea is to have it come from behind the scenes, and let people know they are lovely. Folks nominate someone they know, who has done a good deed in the community. Once the love started, everybody wanted to be a part of it. And we weren t talking about COVID. We weren t talking about politics. We were talking about lifting up people we see every single day. And letting them know they are lovely to us.

A boy and his dog(s)

Keith Vandervort ELY – For Scott Edgett, a local dog sled racer in the midst of training for next month’s WolfTrack Classic, life has always been about the dogs. He grew up in Centerville, a town of less than 100 people north of the Twin Cities, and from a young age he was exposed to the dog life when he visited his uncle, who raised Huskies. “We got one of his pups, I named her Tasha, and she pulled me around on my Big Wheel when I was eight years old,” Scott said. He got another dog, named Nikki, when he was 10. The Alaskan Malamute pulled him around in a home-made wagon.
