Hawthorne’s empty storefronts are emblematic of challenges facing Portland shopping districts

When Ray Ameripour opened Classic Collection Hats on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard over a decade ago, his neighbors stopped by with well wishes and baked goods. It made him feel an immediate connection to the neighborhood, one that would only grow over time.
He loved how vibrant Hawthorne felt as Portlanders and tourists alike flocked to the area, drawn to the eclectic shops and local restaurants that have long made the district one of the city’s premier shopping destinations.
But Ameripour doesn’t know if his shop will survive the coronavirus pandemic.
The good news, at least for Portlanders: Ndamukong Suh is going with him. The defensive end, who grew up in Northeast Portland and attended Grant High School, plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who beat the Green Bay Packers 31-26 in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. It s Suh s second Super Bowl appearance: He also went in 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams, where he lost to…Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Looking for a way to celebrate? In addition to being a member of the NFL s 2010s All-Decade Team and, at one point in time, the highest-paid defensive player in the history of the league Suh has become something of a food magnate in Portland.

Officers say two people were shot 90 minutes before the new year in the King neighborhood.
Portland Police have released the identity of the 18-year-old man shot dead during an incident in Northeast Portland on New Year s Eve.
North Precinct officers say Ja mere Malik Brown died at the scene of a shooting near Northeast Alberta Street and Mallory Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31. An autopsy determined that he died by homicide by gunshot wound, according to a news release.
Another person at the scene also was shot, but police haven t made public any other information regarding the person s identity or the extent of their injuries. No arrests have been made in the case.

A man was shot and killed in Northeast Portland on New Year’s Eve, and police are now investigating the shooting as a homicide.
Police responded about 10:30 p.m. to a report of a shooting at Northeast Alberta Street and Mallory Avenue, according to a news release. Officers found two people injured at the scene.
One victim, a man, died from his injuries. Police have not released any information about the other victim’s condition or detailed the circumstances of the shooting.
Police said they are still looking for the suspects.

UPDATE: A teenager is the most recent victim in the Portland shooting spree that began last year.
The spike in shootings and deaths that began last year has continued into 2021.
According to police, two people were wounded three days into the new year, and a person who was wounded on New Year s Eve has died.
The most recent investigation began at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 3, when officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Southeast 136th Avenue after reports of gun shots. When they arrived, officers found evidence that more than 50 rounds had been fired off. Two apartments and seven vehicles had been struck by gunfire as well, police said.
