Is it OK to eat fish? Experts reveal the hidden truth behind Seaspiracy

The future of marine life is in our hands Credit: Moment RF It’s the surprise documentary hit of the year so far, confrontational in style, shocking in content, and raising hackles across the food and scientific community. Netflix’s Seaspiracy tells it baldly: our oceans are heading for disaster, and it’s our fault. The film dwells on blood-drenched scenes of dolphin slaughter and sharks stripped of their fins, but at the core of the problem is more mundane overfishing. Years of industrial-scale trawling, dodgy farming and appallingly high levels of “by-catch” (accidentally caught fish that is generally thrown back in the sea to die) have left stocks in a parlous level. Apart from the loss of wildlife and damage to the marine environment, it compromises the ocean’s ability to act as a “carbon sink”, which is vital if we are to control global warming.

Fish suppers are a British staple - but yours may have travelled 9,000 miles

Updated: 1 May 2021, 22:51 FISH suppers are a British staple –  but yours might have travelled almost 9,000 miles. That’s a third of the way round the Earth. We looked at some supermarkets’ frozen fare combinations and found fish that had clocked up more than 8,000 miles. 13 The fish milometer reveals just how far some supermarket fish dinners have come Caught in the North Atlantic, they are shipped to China for processing before landing on our plates. Incredibly, your chips might have been from spuds grown in the UK, then shipped to Europe to be chipped before returning to our shores. Our milometer reveals how far some fish dinners have been.

New Vessels: Naval Service to Acquire Four Armed Motor Launches Over Coming Years

The Naval Service provides the maritime component of the Irish State s defence capabilities and is the State s principal seagoing agency. It protects Ireland s interests at and from the sea, including lines of communication, fisheries and offshore resources within the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Naval Service operates jointly with the Army and Air Corps as part of the Irish defence forces. The Naval Service was established in 1946, replacing the Marine and Coastwatching Service set up in 1939. It had replaced the Coastal and Marine Service, the State s first marine service after independence, which was disbanded after a year. Its only ship was the Muirchú, formerly the British armed steam yacht Helga, which had been used by the Royal Navy to shell Dublin during the 1916 Rising. In 1938, Britain handed over the three treaty ports of Cork harbour, Bere haven and Lough Swilly.

Health Check for the Atlantic on the Ocean Climate Survey

A CTD measures conductivity (which helps determine salinity), temperature and depth Credit: Tomasz Szumski Scientists from the Marine Institute, Maynooth University and the National University of Ireland Galway were recently aboard the RV Celtic Explorer, for a 14-day scientific survey studying the shelf and deep water off the west coast of Ireland. This Marine Institute’s annual ocean climate survey has been running since 2006 and facilitates long-term physical and biogeochemical observations of the deepwater environment in the South Rockall Trough. The Rockall Trough is an important region that provides a pathway for the transport of heat and salt from the North-East Atlantic to the Nordic Seas, where waters are subjected to phenomena such as deep convective mixing that creates cold dense water. Water exchange and interactions in the Rockall Trough play a fundamental part in the overall th
