THE window for Asean to take effective action in addressing the ongoing political tumult in Myanmar is increasingly narrowing, say former Asean diplomats and regional experts, as the coup d etat by the military junta against a civilian government approaches its sixth month.
In an Asia News Network webinar on June 21 titled Myanmar: Hope fades, fear mounts, Indonesia’s former foreign minister Dr Marty Natalegawa said that the regional block must do better in its efforts to find a solution to the ongoing crisis, which erupted after the armed forces in Myanmar seized power from the National League for Democracy (NLD) in February. A massive ongoing protest, dubbed the Spring Revolution, rose in response to the coup and was responded to by violence and mass arrests by the junta.
