Bank Quay station set for £3 5m upgrades

By Aran Dhillon, Local Democracy Reporter Warrington Bank Quay railway station MP Andy Carter has welcomed funding to upgrade Warrington Bank Quay railway station. A £3.5 million investment to upgrade several bridge structures at the site is due to start as part of the Great North Rail Project. From the end of January until April 24, Network Rail will carry out work to infill a disused bridge span beneath the station, as well as replacing a railway bridge and footbridge. The work will help to make the railway through Warrington more reliable for passengers and freight services. The railway bridge being replaced supports two railway lines through Warrington Bank Quay, including the tracks on platform one and the adjacent line used predominantly for freight trains.

The area was far different to today, being alive with factories. Reader Peter Cotterill has been in touch with his memories. From my bedroom window I could see 13 factory chimneys, 15 if I leaned out my head out. Warrington, not just Bank Quay was a factory town (more suited to be in Lancashire than Cheshire) hence the smogs that came in damp winters and the grime that was everywhere.
