EAST LONGMEADOW – On June 8, voters will decide whether to re-elect Sarah Truoiolo to the East Longmeadow School Committee or support Aimee Dalenta in her bid for the seat. Reminder Publishing asked each of the candidates several questions about their ideas to support district students, staff and the community.
Reminder Publishing (RP): What are the two most important issues that the school committee must tackle in the next 12 months?
Aimee Dalenta: Over the next year, East Longmeadow will be feeling the substantial effect that the pandemic has had on the social/emotional and academic wellbeing of our children. This is not just an “issue to tackle.” It goes way beyond that, and the effects will last longer than 12 months. It is, in fact, a consequential moment in the history of education.

Some lawmakers and advocates for career and technical education are pushing for a budget amendment in Massachusetts to boost funding for the state’s Career Technical Initiative from $4 million to $16.9 million.

(David Kidd) (TNS) Vocational education advocates are urging lawmakers to beef up funding for more retraining programs as a way to help the tens of thousands of laid-off workers get back into the workforce.
Gov. Charlie Baker has proposed more than quadrupling state spending for a career training program, called the Career Technical Initiative, to educate some 20,000 workers for jobs in high-demand trades. As we emerge from the restrictions of the pandemic, it s clear many jobs in food services, health care and hospitality aren t coming back, so voc-tech training is more important than ever.

Feel as though your tax rate is too high?
In more than two dozen Massachusetts communities, the residential rate for fiscal 2021 is above 20%. It’s below 3% in three communities.
Residential tax rates are set at the city or town level and vary widely.
Western Massachusetts communities continue to top the list as having the highest residential tax rate, though due to a lowered cost of living the average bill remains significantly lower than tax bills in many Eastern and Central Massachusetts communities.
The average property tax bill for Massachusetts homeowners is $6,374 for fiscal 2021, up $197 from the previous year. In some communities, the average tax bill is twice as much. In one community, it’s three times the state average.
