Police Chief Daryl Green to retire June 25

In a statement, Green said he’s grateful for the chance to serve Lansing citizens.  “I am proud of the reforms the Lansing Police Department completed, and it is time for me to pass the baton to another police chief that will continue this important work of reimagining public safety,” he said. Lansing s Police Department has seen its share of controversy under Green s tenure, including the death of Anthony Hulon, who died of asphyxiation after being restrained by police in the Lansing jail. East Lansing ad-hoc police board sets foundation for permanent body

A new form of police accountability could soon come to East Lansing. Committee Chair  Chuck Grigsby said members will present findings to City Council on June 8, with a vote expected on the permanent board on June 15.  City Manager George Lahanas created the temporary committee in May 2020 after allegations that East Lansing Police used excessive force in the arrests of Anthony Loggins Jr. and Uwimana Gasito. Committee members analyzed public records from the police over seven months. Several analyses revealed Black people are disproportionately reflected in stop data in negative ways.
