Tensions mount between Lesotho, SADC facilitator

Maseru – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) facilitator in Lesotho has refused to give the government a full record of proceedings of its inquiry into the June 2015 murder of army commander Lieutenant-General Maaparankoe Mahao.

This has raised the ire of Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro’s government.
The full transcript of the Justice Mphaphi Phumaphi-led inquiry was requested by former army commander Tlali Kamoli to “assist” him prepare his defence against charges that he ordered Lt-Gen Mahao’s murder.
But former South African Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, who heads the SADC facilitation team to Lesotho on behalf of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, has advised against making the full report available as some testimony was presented in camera.

THE family of the slain army commander, Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao, and other victims of human rights violations are livid with the head of the SADC facilitation to Lesotho, Dikgang Moseneke.
They accuse him of working flat out to save politicians, serving and former members of the security agencies from being tried for murder and other serious crimes.
They have vowed to resist his alleged schemes and if need be, they say they will even appeal to the Unites States and the European Union for justice for their relatives.

THE trial of 10 soldiers accused of murdering three Maseru civilians in 2017 will begin on 23 March 2021 despite their pending Constitutional Court application for a permanent stay of proceedings.
Botswana Judge, Onkemetse Tshosa, who is presiding over the matter, on Tuesday set down 12 March 2021 as the pre-trial conference date. Justice Tshosa also said the actual trial will be held from 23 to 26 March and resume on 6 April 2021.
The 10 soldiers are Brigadier Rapele Mphaki, Major Pitso Ramoepane, Sergeant Lekhooa Moepi, Captain Mahlehle Moeletsi, Lance Corporal Mahlomola Makhoali, Private Nthatakane Motanyane, Motšoane Machai, Tieho Tikiso, Liphapang Sefako and Nemase Faso.

ALLIANCE of Democrats (AD) leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Monyane Moleleki has slammed Democratic Congress (DC) leader Mathibeli Mokhothu and All Basotho Convention (ABC) deputy leader Professor Nqosa Mahao over alleged graft and vindictiveness.
Addressing a weekend strategic meeting of his party at ’Mamathe High School in Berea, Mr Moleleki accused Prof Mahao of vindictiveness after the June 2015 murder of his younger brother, former army commander Lieutenant General (Lt-Gen) Maaparankoe Mahao.
Lt-Gen Mahao was murdered by fellow soldiers under the command of former army commander, Lt-Gen Tlali Kamoli. The army claimed at the time that Lt-Gen Mahao had been shot while resisting arrest for allegedly leading a mutiny aimed at toppling Lt-Gen Tlali Kamoli’s command.
