(WVIR) - On Thursday, Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) hosted a virtual panel, announcing the reintroduction of the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act. The act was named after Dr. Lorna Breen, a physician from Charlottesville, who took her own life after fighting the pandemic head-on in New York last year. Jennifer Feist, Breen’s sister, said it was if she and other healthcare workers were fighting a war on the front lines. After getting COVID-19 herself, then returning back to work to help her patients, Feist said her sister was not the same.

Thousands of frontline workers have been struggling with mental health during the coronavirus pandemic. Sen. Tim Kaine introduced the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act in hopes of providing immediate and long-term solutions for them.

Tim Kaine is reintroducing a bipartisan measure named after Dr. Lorna Breen, a New York City emergency room director who died by suicide in April last year. Breen was spending time with family in Charlottesville after a round-the-clock schedule responding to the pandemic. The proposal already has some funding laid out in the Senate’s COVID relief bill, which Kaine says he expects to pass this week. Emily Boucher, a nurse from Abingdon, Va., spoke at a press conference with Kaine earlier today. She said  providing and maintaining help is necessary, because healthcare burnout isn’t going to end.
