From Money to Mental Health, Pandemic Ravages LGBTQ+ Households December 23 2020 3:28 PM EST According to a report by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), a U.S.-based gender equality think tank, this year’s global pandemic has hit LGBTQ+ people and households harder than the average American. The report interviewed over 3,400 adults in the U.S., and found that almost two- thirds of LGBTQ+ households have had at least one member lose a job since the pandemic started. A little under half of non-LGBTQ+ households reported losing a job. Additionally, two thirds of LGBTQ+ households reported having at least one serious financial problem this year. The numbers are much worse for QTPOC. Seventy percent of Latinx LGBTQ+ households have had serious financial problems and 95 percent of Black LGBTQ+ people have.

Alaska health worker has strong allergic reaction to vaccine An Alaska health care worker had a severe allergic reaction to the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine within 10 minutes of receiving a shot, state health officials said. As opposed to the few vaccine recipients in England who had a similar experience, the female worker in the capital city of Juneau did not have a history of allergic reactions.  The woman started feeling shortness of breath and was treated with epinephrine and other medicines for what officials determined was anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. She was kept overnight but has recovered. U.S. health authorities have warned about rare allergic reactions during the vaccine rollout.

But for members of the LGBTQ community such as Marshall and Perry, the pandemic has been particularly pernicious, exposing vulnerabilities that often bubble beneath the surface. A report out Wednesday documents the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on LGTBQ households, and the findings are sobering: greater economic upheaval, higher unemployment rates and deeper challenges in accessing health care.
