Press Release – Lyall Bay Park
Any day there’s a hint of sun and/or swell you’ll find thousands of surfers, dog walkers, runners, walkers, sunbathers, onlookers and others gathering at the Eastern/airport end of Lyall Bay.
Yet the facilities to service these groups are low or non-existent. The nearest toilet facility is a kilometre away and there are no play areas, picnic tables, bike racks or lockers.
Two Lyall Bay parents Dan Eves and Sloan McPhee saw the opportunity to solve the facility issues while creating a gathering space for the community. A piece of spare land adjacent to the large car park across the road from the beach could easily become a sheltered and family friendly meeting space for locals and many others who frequent the Eastern end of the bay.

BREAKFAST
There s no better way to start the day than with breakfast at Wellington s surf mecca Lyall Bay. Maranui Cafe is so popular that you may have to wait a while – trust me, it s worth it. My go-to here is Queen Sally s Vegan Bliss Bowl – a delicious, healthy meal featuring house-made falafel and preserved lemon and turmeric quinoa, and topped with hummus, sauerkraut, harissa and savoury granola. This one dish has so many components – all made in-house – and I love how colourful and tasty it is. See maranuicafe.co.nz

A shop in Wellington s Lyall Bay provides loser plates: old fashioned, pretty china plates with blunt, sweary messages written on them in pretty text. One of Finance Minister Grant Robertson s staffers considered buying one for Robertson s office door with the words: No. There is no f money.
Report from Benoit Pette
Following a year-long process to rally the community and engage with Eastern ward Councillors, two meetings have been organised at the Wellington City Council between No-Fly Zone, members of the Wellington Aero Club, City Councillors and the Airport (although the latter only attended the first one). The meetings were to discuss the noise inflicted on residents (especially Miramar North, Roseneath and Lyall Bay) by recreational air traffic when the Aero Club runs the circuit.
This issue had become particularly clear following lockdown, where many residents had experienced the peace from airspace cleared of traffic.
The first meeting, organised on the 10th of November, allowed each party to present their point of view. The Aero Club outlined the constraints it was operating under and its multiple contributions to the community; the Airport explained it wasn’t responsible for determining the circuit, and No-Fly Zone read multiple statements from residents
