Liberia: CONDO Welcomes Latest Probe into Land Disputes in Nimba, But With Caution Liberia: CONDO Welcomes Latest Probe into Land Disputes in Nimba, But With Caution Share MONROVIA – The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Condo Reconciliation Group Incorporated, a United States-based non-governmental organization, Abraham Jaboik  Keita, says Condo wholeheartedly welcomes the constitution of a special committee by President George Manneh Weah to mediate lingering land disputes in Nimba County towards finding an amicable solution. It can be recalled that recently, President Weah constituted the special committee and named it the Nimba County Conflict Resolution Committee.  Among other things, the committee is charged with the responsibility to fully investigate the reported land disputes in Nimba County, particularly in Ganta, establish the root cause(s) of the recent violence in the county, and make recommendations for resolution.

In these contexts, ensuring women’s land rights can fall by the wayside. However, improving women’s access to land and protecting their rights, can be a stabilizing factor for these situations, contributing to economic and social stability, food security, sustainable development, peace and equality. Three countries from different regions began focusing on women’s access to land in their quest for stability and security – Liberia, Palestine, and Colombia. What are the lessons other countries can learn from their experiences? 

President Weah Constitutes Special Committee To Mediate Nimba County Land Conflict

The President of the Republic, Dr. George Manneh Weah, has constituted a special presidential committee to mediate lingering land disputes in Nimba County towards finding an amicable solution. According to an Executive Mansion press release, the Nimba County Conflict Resolution Committee, as the President named it, is charged with the responsibility to, amongst other things, fully investigate reported land dispute in Nimba County, particularly in the capital Ganta, establish the root cause(s) of the recent violence in the county, and make recommendations for resolution. Accordingly, the committee is expected to report to the President in 60 days. The Minister of Internal Affairs will chair the Committee while the Head of the Liberia Land Authority will serve as co-chairperson.

FDA, FFI Host Two National Workshops For Pygmy Hippopotamus Conservation And Validation Of A Collaborative Management Plan for Sapo National Park

On the 30 th of March 2021, the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia (FDA) in collaboration with Fauna and Flora International (FFI) held a multi-stakeholder workshop to validate the management plan for the Sapo National Park (SNP), Liberia’s oldest protected area. The park is located in southeastern Liberia, situated in Sinoe, River Gee, and Grand Gedeh Counties. SNP is the largest protected area in Liberia and was established in 1983. It covers an area of 1,804 km 2 (180,400 ha). The park contains extremely diverse ecological communities, distinctive fauna and flora, and a mosaic of forest types. SNP is also a ‘regional center of endemism’, i.e. an area rich in species found nowhere else. It provides refuge and serves as the last stronghold for species such as the western chimpanzee, African forest elephant, and pygmy hippopotamus, some of the most threatened species in the world.
