Leitrim councillor Mary Bohan forged the way for women in local politics Reporter:   ); International Women s Day takes place this week on March 8 and is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.  Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women s achievements or rally for women s equality.  Marked annually, International Women s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year  when we  celebrate women s achievements; raise awareness about women s equality; lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female-focused charities. This week the Leitrim Observer  is acknowledging Leitrim women who have made an impact on life in our county whether that be through volunteer work, promoting the county, through music and inspiring us during Covid. It is a way of thanking and  acknowledging them for all they do to  enhance  life for the better for their county men and women. H

Leitrim councillors back call for support for local media Reporter: ); Leitrim County Councillors have unanimously backed a resolution calling for support for local newspapers. In correspondence Leitrim County Council received a copy of a resolution passed by Tipperary County Council last month. In that Tipperary County Council “called on the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, Catherine Martin TD, to consider providing extra supports to regional newspapers who provide an essential support to many communities including Co Leitrim during the Covid pandemic”. Highlighting the correspondence, Cllr Enda McGloin proposed that Leitrim support a similar resolution be passed by Leitrim County Council.

Man had rubbish accumulating in his Leitrim home Reporter:   ); A man who was before the recent sitting of Ballyshannon District Court on charges relating to rubbish accumulated at his home has been given the benefit of the Probation of Offenders Act. However, he also had to make a contribution toward prosecution costs. Owen Ward with addresses listed as 3 Dartry View, Kinlough, Co Leitrim and 69 Main Street, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh was ordered to pay €700 towards costs. He was told to have the money at Friday’s sitting of Ballyshannon District Court. Ward had been charged with two counts of holding waste in a manner that caused or was likely to cause environmental pollution.
