Volunteer crisis actors screamed at police for information about loved ones, held arms aloft that were said to be burned and sometimes grew combative with those on hand to help them.
The hands-on drill brings together mutual-aid fire, police and EMS responders with Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority fire and police crews. It’s a Federal Aviation Administration requirement that it be held every three years, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the drill in April 2020 when it should have been held.
For this year, the airport authority scaled back the number of volunteers portraying the walking wounded or worse. Most of the participants wore face coverings, and gone were the dramatic makeup from past years’ exercises that made make-believe injuries seem all the more real.
