Residents are reacting to a just-approved gas station and mini-market on Lakeview Road right next to Highway 135 in Orcutt.
People that live or shop around the area where the new gas station will be built say theyâre worried about how much traffic it could create. It ll just add to the congestion and the intersection and especially during the morning rush hour at 8 o clock with a gas station there, it ll just be chaos,â Santa Maria resident Ryan Consolascio said.
According to Planning and Development Department reports, the plan is to build a 5,054-square-foot building that will also include a mini-market as well as a 2,814-square-foot canopy over 8 fueling stations.
A gasoline station and minimarket was approved for the intersection of Lakeview Road and Orcutt Road at Highway 135 by the Santa Barbara County zoning administrator in a virtual hearing Monday morning.
Three area residents sent letters to the Planning and Development Department, four spoke at the hearing and several posted messages on various social media pages, all but a few opposing the project based on its effect on traffic congestion in the intersection.
Lakeview Road crosses both Orcutt Road and Highway 135 within a distance of about 200 feet, and the two eastbound lanes of Lakeview merge into a single lane about 200 feet east of Orcutt Road, right before a crosswalk serving students from nearby Lakeview Junior High School.

Schenectady mayor Gary McCarthy announced the first-ever First Responders Holiday Parade 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The event will replace this year’s canceled Schenectady annual holiday parade traditionally held before Thanksgiving.
“We had this idea when news came that the Schenectady Holiday Parade was canceled because of the pandemic,” said Assistant Fire Chief Don Mareno in a press release. “That parade is typically held in late November and believed to be the largest nighttime holiday parade in the Northeast.
“It would have been the 52nd year of the parade. With all the stresses of everything happening because of COVID, we thought it would be nice to bring the parade to the community.”
Top Story I think people are very excited, said Rachel Kipp. Delaware is definitely a place that has a lot of state pride. I think it s because it s a small state and we all kind of feel like we know each other, and so when something great happens to one of our own, we all really want to celebrate. More Headlines
