Sheila Gibbons, from Atherton, was the first to be vaccinated in Leigh in December MORE than 47,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the borough with all care homes residents and staff done. By the end of last weekend (January 31), 35,500 vaccines had been carried out for people in the first four priority cohort groups across the borough of Wigan. This includes people aged 70 and above as well as anyone who is considered to be clinically extremely vulnerable according to the national guidance. In addition, 11,500 vaccines have been given to health and social care staff.

Forty-nine of the borough’s 52 care homes have received coronavirus vaccines so far. Three care homes currently have cases of Covid so cannot be vaccinated yet. The local NHS body overseeing the community vaccination programme has said the remaining three care homes will be vaccinated as soon as possible. It comes as around 37,500 doses have now been administered across Wigan. Of those, 27,500 vaccine doses have been administered to people in priority groups and 10,000 health and social care staff have also been vaccinated. This includes those vaccinated at centres in Leigh, Golborne, Hindley and Wigan and by Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.
