Lekhanya dies
MASERU-MAJOR General Metsing Lekhanya, who toppled the Leabua Jonathan-led government in a bloodless coup in 1986, has died.
He was 82.
Lekhanya toppled the BNP government on January 20, 1986 and imposed a military regime that ruled Lesotho for the next five years.
Major General Lekhanya, who was diabetic, died at the Makoanyane Military Hospital in Maseru.
He also suffered from high blood pressure.
His family says they are still awaiting post mortem results to ascertain the cause of death.
The family spokesman, Tšepo Lekhanya, said the former army commander suffered from chronic illnesses.
“He was the backbone of the family. He was our father,” Lekhanya said.

Army is ripe for reform
ELSEWHERE in this issue we carry a story of how some soldiers went berserk last weekend, beating up villagers after one of their own was assaulted at a beer drink.
Tragically, one person died during the fracas.
We are not surprised that things turned out that way. Sadly, we have heard stories similar to this one many a time.
While the bulk of our soldiers are quite smart and are committed to the cause of serving the nation, we cannot hide from the fact that the army also has pockets of rogue officers.
These officers think they can act above the law by virtue of holding superior gun-fire.

THE nightmare continues for two Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) officers who have been languishing in a South African prison since their arrest in the neighbouring country five months ago.
This after the Matatiele Magistrates’ Court on Thursday denied them bail and ordered that they stand trial on 15 January 2021. This means that the duo, Privates Rorisang Moepi and Dumile Tsoanyane, will spend Christmas behind bars.
They were arrested in Matatiele, Eastern Cape on 19 July 2020 by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) after they allegedly pursued South African rustlers who had allegedly stolen livestock in Lesotho.
