Parasite’s historic victory, will the Academy have another uncommon spell of good taste? The stars appear to be aligning for
Nomadland, which has won the top prize from the Hollywood Foreign Press, the British Academy, the Producers Guild, and the Directors Guild (the last three of which share lots of members with the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences). But don’t pop the bubbly for last year’s most critically acclaimed movie just yet. After all,
1917 won all of those same precursors, only to lose Best Picture at the finish line.

After winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama as a -180 favorite, Nomadland has vaulted up the oddsboard to become a -600 favorite in Oscar odds to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The film stars Frances McDormand as a widow who travels across the United States after losing her job and meets people in similar struggling circumstances. The movie has been universally acclaimed by film critics and seems like a runaway train to take the golden statue.
The competition in the Best Picture category for 2020 doesn’t seem as overwhelming as in years past with the COVID-19 pandemic shuttering a lot of new productions. Nearly all of the films nominated for Best Picture were shot prior to the pandemic, which may partially explain why Nomadland is such an odds-on favorite for arguably the most coveted award in the film industry.

Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg s buoyant comedy about a school teacher who turns to alcohol to cope with his midlife crisis is very different in tone from Tove Ditlevsen s slim, punchy autobiographical trilogy Childhood, Youth, Dependency about a gifted poet who achieves fame but ends up a drug addict. Yet both are set in Copenhagen and wise to the slippery slope of substance abuse and its nihilistic appeal. Vinterberg finds black humour in tragedy, while Ditlevsen becomes mired in it. There s a plainspoken clarity to her prose that somehow makes the devastating trajectory of her short life hit even harder.
