LEWISTON, Maine A 71-year-old woman was raking in her yard Thursday morning in Lewiston when she was attacked by a pit bull, according to police. The incident ended with police shooting and killing the dog to protect the woman, Lewiston Police Lt. David St. Pierre said.
St. Pierre said police responded to a “frantic call for assistance” on Helen Street around 11:15 a.m., where it was reported a woman was “being attacked by a pit bull.”

TURNER, Maine The man accused of killing a Turner couple was in court for the first time on Wednesday.
24-year-old Patrick Maher appeared at the Lewiston District Court on two counts of knowing or intentional murder, related to the deaths of Troy Varney and Dulsie Varney.
A plea was
not entered on Wednesday. I m not going to be taking a plea here today, Justice Valerie Stanfill said. We just want to make sure that you understand what you re charged with.
The father of an 11-year-old Auburn girl who stabbed him also told police that he had been having difficulties parenting his daughter, and that he used physical force, including slapping and spanking, on her.

AUBURN A Mechanic Falls man stole the identify of a fellow electrical worker in 2016, then used that man’s identity for more than a year, including in court, where he was convicted of drunken driving.
