For months, colleges have weighed the risks and rewards of bringing students back to campuses disrupted by Covid-19. Now they’re considering what to do about their employees.
Committees at colleges and universities across the country are evaluating the future of work, asking to what extent staff and some faculty members could remain virtual and what that would mean for life on campus and off. There are broad implications, for example, for recruiting and campus density.

Portland State University officials said Wednesday the school would require on-campus students, faculty and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 starting in September.
Students will have to verify their vaccination status before starting on-campus classes in the fall term. In a letter to students, faculty and staff, President Stephen Percy said the school’s dense urban campus gives it a “unique responsibility” to guard against the virus’ spread.
“All of us are eager to put the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and come together again in person as a campus community,” Percy wrote. “Widespread vaccination is our clearest and best path toward that future.”
Portland State University announced on Wednesday that it will be requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for the upcoming fall.
The university will be requiring all in-person students, faculty and staff to be vaccinated starting this fall, “unless they claim a medical or religious exemption,” according to an email sent to the campus community Wednesday afternoon.
“Until the Food and Drug Administration has fully approved at least one vaccine, a personal exemption is available,” PSU President Stephen Percy wrote in that message. “Once one or more of the vaccines receives full approval, the personal exemption will be discontinued. Details of the employee vaccination requirement will be determined in consultation with PSU’s faculty and staff leadership and labor union partners.”
