Beatrice Morrow Cannady’s profile is on the rise again in her adopted state.
A Northeast Portland affordable-housing complex called The Beatrice Morrow opened in 2018. The following year, Beatrice Morrow Cannady Elementary School in Happy Valley began classes. A Portland city park soon might be known as Cannady Park.
Such recognition, Oregon civic leaders increasingly recognize, was overdue.
Cannady, who died in 1974 at age 84, was one of the most impactful and controversial Black activists in 20th century Portland, but the passage of time allowed her name to slip from collective memory.
North Clackamas hires school district leader from within
Internal candidate Shay James to replace current Superintendent Matt Utterback
School board members have chosen Dr. Shay James to replace retiring North Clackamas Superintendent Matt Utterback starting July 1.
James, currently assistant superintendent of education fo
r the North Clackamas School District, joined NCSD as its executive director of high school programs in 2016, when she earned an annual salary of $130,803. As superintendent, she will make a $230,000 annual base salary, and Utterback s annual base salary was $207,500 starting in 2018-19.
Two other finalists for the position included recruits from Nevada or Minnesota: assistant superintendents Debbie Brockett and Timothy Gadson.
Education:
Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of Oregon with a minor in English; MPA from Lewis & Clark College. High/Secondary School: St. Aloysius, Cork City, Ireland

A political journalist or columnist. I was inspired to go to journalism school after watching All the President’s Men as a teen. My Master’s is in Public Administration. I spent fifteen years working in the public policy and justice system arenas. I am proud to return to a position working with our members public servants in the intelligence community and the broader federal employee community.
