FEWER young people in West Dunbartonshire are going on to positive destinations after leaving school, according to official statistics. The School Leaver Destination Report for 2019/2020 recorded 89.66 per cent positive destinations in West Dunbartonshire – 3.7 per cent below the national figure, and a drop of 3.96 per cent from last years figure of 93.62 per cent. In Dumbarton, of the 2019/20 leavers from Dumbarton Academy, almost 38 per cent progressed to higher education, while 26 per cent were in employment. A further 21 per cent were recorded as being in further education and 7 per cent were recorded in the “unemployed, seeking work” category. Almost 4 per cent fell under “unemployed, not seeking” and in training.

Jack Mullen, 15, is releasing his latest song, “Be Inspired”, to help Children’s Hospices Across Scotland. He told the Reporter: “I was planning to work on a new song a couple of months ago, but at the same time I was thinking of other ways I could raise money for Robin House, so I decided to use the song to do that. “I have been volunteering in the gardens at Robin House since I was a young boy and they have been a big part of my charity work over the years. “The song is dedicated to the children and the staff there.

Two talented Vale singers have been announced the winners of two prestigious awards in recognition of the work they did in their local community during lockdown. Alfie King, 12, and Jack Mullen, 15, were nominated for Unsung Hero of the Year at the Sunday Mail Young Scot awards after performing outside care homes and to neighbours in Dumbarton and the Vale who have been shielding over lockdown. However, at a virtual ceremony on Friday, the kind-hearted duo were also named Young Scots of the Year. And the award came as a shock to both boys who attended virtually, with Alfie heard exclaiming “We won!” as it was announced by TV presenter Jean Johansson.
