CALGARY A police officer with the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has been suspended in connection with an investigation conducted by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). Officials say the development was the result of information that a police officer tampered with evidence in connection with a separate investigation. As provided by the Police Act, the provincial director of law enforcement has directed ASIRT to investigate the matter, the LPS said in a release. The service has also launched a professional misconduct investigation under the Police Act and Police Service Regulation. The police officer, who has not been named, has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

On May, 11 the Director of Law Enforcement (DLE) was notified that information obtained during the course of an ongoing investigation had raised concerns regarding the handling of several items which may have been potential exhibits in that investigation by a member of the Lethbridge Police Service. ASIRT was directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the potential mishandling of the evidence by the officer.
According to a press release ASIRT’s investigation will examine the manner in which the potential exhibits were managed during the incident, and seek to determine whether the actions in question were lawful.
CALGARY A drug house in Lethbridge has been shuttered by Alberta sheriffs for the next 90 days. Members of the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit obtained a court order against the owner of a property at 124 19th Street N., which comes into effect on Wednesday and lasts until Aug. 9. Crews boarded up the house and erected a fence around the property to prevent access. “The combined efforts of the Alberta Sheriffs and the Lethbridge Police Service in this case are a great example of how working together can put a stop to criminal activity that endangers law-abiding Albertans, said Justice Minister Kaycee Madu in a statement.
