CHICAGO Maisie Robinson was so excited for her first day of kindergarten that she woke up at 2:30 a.m. to make her family breakfast.
“Unfortunately, the cereal was kind of soggy by the time we got up,” said her mother, Lindsey Post Robinson.
But that hardly dulled Maisie’s enthusiasm. She skipped to school last week in her purple coat, part of a wave of Chicago elementary school students who met their teachers and classmates in person for the first time.
A year into the coronavirus pandemic, many American students have been in their classrooms since last fall frequently off and on, as outbreaks have forced quarantines and closures. But in several large cities, students have started returning to school buildings only in the last few weeks.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Today the Louisiana Department of Education released the names of 21 students selected as finalists in the state’s annual Students of the Year competition. The 21 students selected include one elementary, middle and high school student from each of the state’s seven regions. The finalists represent traditional public, public charter and nonpublic schools. The finalists will participate in a virtual ceremony on April 21, when the winners will be announced for each grade level.
“I’m proud of each of these finalists and would be honored to have any of them represent us as a Louisiana Student of the Year,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “Their achievements and hard work are proof that Louisiana’s children are as capable as any in the nation.” Public and nonpublic schools were asked to submit one candidate from their student body.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A man and his friend were pinned against a Shell station in a hit and run on Mardi Gras night.
Adam Sivia and his friend were waiting to meet up with friends at the gas station when the accident occurred. Sivia recalls his friend receiving minor injuries, while he received two broken legs.
